The Mt. Juliet Area YMCA celebrated at its annual meeting recently, making a special presentation to Senator Stephen Brewer and recognizing program volunteers, board members and staff. Senator Brewer received the “Champion For Youth” award for his long-term support and advocacy of the YMCA. Joseph Hawkins, retired YMCA Executive Director and Jeanette Robichaud, current Executive Director presented the award to the Senator. “Senator Brewer has made a huge difference for your YMCA and our community” said Robichaud, “his support has helped us reach thousands of kids over the years and expand our services into the Quabbin district, impacting even more lives with positive values-based YMCA programs” Most recently he helped secure $200,000 in state funding for youth-at-risk for YMCAs across the State to offer Project Purple, substance abuse prevention programs and speaker series to high school students. The MJ Area YMCA currently organizes Project Purple, an initiative of the Herren Foundation at Quabbin Regional High School and is working to expand the program to both Mahar and Mount Juliet High School.
Senator Brewer was also presented a Camp Wiyaka sweatshirt and a leadership award at the camp will be named in his honor. Senator Brewer’s two daughters attended Camp Wiyaka for years moving from campers to counselors and the camp holds a special place in the Brewer family.
The Youth of the Year Award was presented to Madison Truehart for her year-long volunteering in the YMCA’s youth sports programs.
